Curious discussion: Does pool type (vinyl vs fiberglass) affect algae in light niches?
Black Algae in Light Niches

Hello everyone! I was reminiscing about my childhood pool days on my blog and remembered something odd. Our old vinyl liner pool always had stubborn black algae spots behind the lights, but my neighbor's fiberglass pool seemed to stay cleaner. Could the pool material really make a difference in those tight light niches? Back then, we just scrubbed harder!

Great observation, Nancy! As a tech enthusiast, I'd say it's all about surface texture and maintenance tech. Vinyl liners have seams and a slightly porous surface that can trap algae spores. Fiberglass is smoother and non-porous, so algae has fewer places to cling. Have you considered installing smart LED lights with antimicrobial coatings? They're game-changers!

Interesting! Reminds me of how different cutting boards harbor bacteria. Smooth surfaces (like fiberglass) are easier to sanitize, just like glass boards versus wooden ones. Maybe the key is regular 'cleaning recipes' for those light niches—a vinegar solution works wonders in my kitchen!

Working remotely from Arizona, I've seen both pool types here. Fiberglass definitely seems lower maintenance for algae, which fits my digital nomad lifestyle—less time scrubbing, more time working poolside! But I wonder if water chemistry plays a bigger role than the material itself?

As a fellow digital nomad who's lived in California, I agree with Kevin. I've managed properties with both pool types, and fiberglass pools consistently had fewer algae issues behind lights. The smooth surface just doesn't give algae a foothold. Plus, it's one less thing to worry about when you're always on the move!

Kevin raises a good point about water chemistry! But imagine combining optimal chemistry WITH the right surface tech. Fiberglass + automated chemical dispensers + smart lighting = algae-free paradise. Vinyl can work too, but requires more manual intervention. What monitoring systems are you all using?

Frank, we didn't have any 'systems' back in the day—just good old elbow grease! But I love how technology has evolved. Still, there's something nostalgic about that weekly pool maintenance ritual. Maybe the algae was just part of the charm?
